Photomanipulation Week: Stock and such

Journal Entry: Wed Apr 9, 2008, 11:06 AM

I realize (especially after the announcement of the Face Your Fear - Contest), that not everyone actually know what stock is.

Stock is a variety of images (either found on dA or various other stock sites) that people provide for other people to freely use in mainly digital artworks that you submit to your gallery.

And so it is written..

FAQ #217: What are "Stock Photos" and can I use "Stock Photos" in my submissions?

This FAQ is a very important read as it explains very clearly the policy of usage:

"Stock images are images that are posted somewhere with the express intent that it may be used by other artists in their own artwork. Use of these images in this fashion are subject to the artist's license, which may or may not require the payment of fees.

The use of stock imagery at deviantART is permissible if and only if you can provide a link to the source of the stock image along with some kind of proof that you have satisfied the terms of the stock image license.

Please remember to follow all terms and conditions which might be attached to the stock by the provider. Some of the more common terms are non-commercial use only and a requirement to link back to the stock provider but terms can vary greatly so be certain to check.

Failure to obey all of the required Terms and Conditions or License requirements attached to the stock may result in the removal of your submission

Please be aware that not all websites are considered legitimate stock imagery resources. Only the legal owner of the imagery has the ability to offer the work as a stock resource- if the 'stock' website includes images taken from print or film, or includes photographs featuring celebrities or supermodels then you may rest assured that it is not a valid resources site. Likewise "Render" websites are not valid stock sources as they offer copyrighted materials which have been cut apart and which are offered by people without the legal right to do so.

Also be aware that the lack of obvious copyright information does not imply that the imagery is free for use.

We urge all artists who rely upon stock imagery to provide a link back the specific stock URL in their description even if the terms do not require it in order to prevent any confusion or misunderstandings. When doing so please be certain to link to the specific URL of the stock item and not simply to the website in general; for example do not simply link to the front page of sxc.hu or gettyimages.com but provide the exact link so that a staff member or other interested user can easily locate the stock item."

Other Resources such as Brushes, Actions, Textures, etc.requires the same crediting/linkage as when using Stock images. The same terms and policies applies here.

What is NOT stock?

Main rule: Treat all images as copyrighted and unusable unless specifically stated otherwise.
If the site do not say STOCK; then it's not, and therefore prohibited to use.
This applies for all images found both on dA and on other sites.

What is Unrestricted stock?

What is unrestricted stock?
The providers have given their permission to use the stock in commercial or non-commercial work, inside or outside deviantART, and does not need to, as a mandatory condition, ask for permission written or other.

Unrestricted resources refers to any stock image, brush pack, texture, or other submission with the purpose of being used to create Artwork, or any of the following:

:bulletred: Websites, journals and banners
:bulletred: Literary tags and images
:bulletred: Advertising, publishing, portfolios
:bulletred: Games, packaging, electronic media, etc.
:bulletred: And of course on dA and offsite prints

Note that unstricted stock still prohibits sale and distribution of the stock image "as is".
(For instance, selling stock as stock is not permitted.)

How pity your interviews are so short. :( Anyway, great to know something about most interesting photomanipulators there. Thanks for your patience.
Long time ago I wrote a very long interview with *Sarachmet : [link]
She is a great photomanipulator of her own photography. Feel free to use this interview for news lessons for people.

No need to argue
Yup, I have watched her for quite some time now.
I know, but the people I interview themselves decide how long an answer they give. Sarachmet gave pretty long replies. :)
Besides, not everyone have long attention spans to read long articles. ;p
